Types of misdirection

Aesthetic manipulation

The design of an interface is crafted to intentionally dissuade or promote certain actions.

Trick wording

Language, that when glanced at, appears to ask one thing, but asks something else entirely.

Example

Carvana, an online used car retailer, employed a misdirection tactic during its checkout process. When offering extended vehicle coverage, the option to decline was not readily visible. Instead, users had to scroll past prominent prompts to accept coverage to find a small, less conspicuous link stating, “I choose to decline coverage and continue.” This design choice diverted users' attention away from the opt-out option, making it more likely they would inadvertently accept additional coverage.
