Forced continuity
Forced continuity occurs when users are offered a discount, package, or other advantage for a limited time. However, once the limited time expires, they are charged full price without being notified.
Hidden costs
The hidden cost pattern adds extra charges during the final stages of a user flow (usually a checkout or sign-up screen).
Hidden information
The hidden information pattern purposely obscures relevant information.
Pre-selection
Pre-selection occurs when users are automatically signed up for something they may not be interested in.
Example
When you landed on Adobe’s official Reader download page (pre-2021), two extra products, McAfee Security Scan Plus and McAfee Safe Connect will automatically be downloaded unless you notice the checkboxes and opt out.
